Preventing Dog and Animal Attacks

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United States, small children, the elderly and mail carriers, in that order, are the most frequent victims of dog bites and dog attacks. Here are some tips to avoid dog bites and dog attacks.

Carefully consider the breed of dog you intend to adopt, as certain breeds have a far higher rate of attack than others.

  • Train your dog.
  • Keep your dog healthy.
  • Spay or neuter your pet.
  • Insure that your dog is properly socialized.
  • Do not approach strange dogs.
  • Avoid eye contact with unfamiliar dogs.
  • Do not run past a dog, as a dog’s natural instinct is to chase and catch prey.
  • Never leave babies or small children alone in the presence of a dog.
  • Teach children not to approach strange dogs and ask permission from the owner of the dog before petting a dog.
